English outlet, the Daily Mail are reporting that Manchester United are interested in Barcelona’s Dutch midfielder, Frenkie de Jong as a replacement for Paul Pogba. Pogba is expected to leave United in the summer on a free transfer as his contract his expiring. Barcelona who are in financial trouble are reportedly willing to let go of de Jong for a fee of£75million. United will surely have competition for his signature as Manchester City have also been linked with him.
de Jong will solve a long standing Manchester United which is the lack of a deep lying playmaker. Ever since, Michael Carrick has retired, United have struggled to replace him. Although at Barcelona, de Jong has played in a more advanced role, he is very comfortable playing a deeper role as seen during his time at Ajax.
Man United’s possible 4-2-3-1 formation with Frenkie de Jong
Lot of Manchester United fans might be of the opinion that until Fred is replaced, the team will not be capable of winning anything. Fred has been excellent for Brazil specifically due to the different role he plays for them. He excels in a slight advanced role ahead of Fabinho while playing for Brazil. We might get to see a completely new Fred for United if he is partnered with a deep lying playmaker like Frenkie de Jong. Overall, this a transfer which makes complete sense for Manchester United whoever the next manager is.
