Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are under tremendous pressure after their disastrous performance against RB Leipzig which saw them drop out of Champions League into the Europa League. Although Solskjaer has had success using the back three formation against City in the past, the disastrous defensive performance in Germany is bound to have an impact on his tactics against City. With Anthony Martial reported fit again, Solskjaer has the tools to pick an attacking 4-3-3 formation which can take the game to Manchester City. Manchester United expected starting lineup against Man City
The defensive problems United had in Germany was primarily due to the fullbacks failing to understand their roles properly. Both Wan Bissaka and Telles were directly responsible for the first two goals United conceded but the blame entirely can’t be placed on them. As Leipzig practically started the game without any striker, the three centre backs didn’t have anybody to cover and were dragged from their positions, especially Luke Shaw. This led to space in the centre of the defence thereby dragging both the full-backs inside and leaving large spaces on the wings.
Pep Guardiola would also try to exploit the same flaws in United’s defence if Solskjaer decides to again play with a back three formation. So, we expect United to switch back to a 4-3-3 with two defensive midfielders allowing the front 4 to counter-attack against City’s defence.
