Atletico Madrid full back Filipe Luis claims that Antoine Greizmann flirted with a move to Old Trafford this summer just to get a better contract at Atletico the Daily Mail reports. It was widely known that United were interested in the French forward but after a transfer ban on Atletico made it impossible for the Spanish club to sign a replacement, Griezmann made the decision to stay.
‘Often players talk when they feel they are not being valued as they deserve. Then they get more attention. He would have had many offers from many teams.
‘A player of his size wants to be up with the biggest in terms of contract and value. And that is fair – as Griezmann is doing great here.
‘In the end, for all the talk about other clubs, he always wanted to stay here and he is still here, happy and liking it.’
It is expected that Manchester United will be back in for Griezmann in 2018 but his teammate Filipe Luis hopes that Griezmann stays at Atletico for many years to come. For United, it is clear that if they hope return to being the best in Europe, they need to sign more players. The game against Liverpool clearly showed that Mourinho still needs to work on his team’s attack as they struggled to get the ball to Lukaku and support him all game.
Mourinho’s teams were always defensively solid but were lethal on the counter. But this Manchester United team still hasn’t shown us the same effectiveness on the counter in the big games. With Manchester City destroying opponents every week, United can’t afford any slip ups in the league this season.
