At just 15 years old, Jeremy Monga has become one of the most talked about youngsters in England. After a tremendous season for his boyhood club, it looks like all the top clubs in Europe will be keen to capture his signature. Here is why the winger is so highly rated at such a young age.
Why Jeremy Monga Is One Of Europe’s Hottest Prospects
Jeremy Monga’s Achievements So Far
Despite being so young, Monga has already had plenty of opportunities in the game. Last season, he helped Leicester City to glory as they won the U16 PL Cup versus Manchester City, with fellow academy talent Jake Evans scoring a brace. Since then, he made the step up to the Under 21 side in August as he came off the bench versus Southampton U21s and Burton Albion’s first team.
He then went on to earn more minutes for the Under-18s after this, as he scored a goal and an assist against Chelsea. As a result, the winger would return to the under-21s, where he has been ever since. For both sides combined, he has tallied nine goals and assists so far, which is an impressive tally against players much older than him.
Due to his standout performances for the club’s academy, Monga has even been in and around the first team. He has trained with players like Jamie Vardy or Facundo Buonanotte on a regular basis and not looked out of his depth, which even led to him being on the bench in the club’s F.A. Cup clash with Manchester United. Despite not making his debut, it was still an incredible experience for him and is a testament to how good he is.
This success for his has also led to him becoming a pivotal figure in the England youth setup. Several caps at both Under 15s and 16s levels have further demonstrated his capabilities against tough opposition. The most recent camp with the u16s saw him find the net on three occasions, with two assists, whilst also captaining his country.
Jeremy Monga’s Playing Style
Comparisons to the likes of Eberechi Eze and Jeremy Doku have came over the past week, and its no surprise given his attributes. An ambipedal winger, who can play off either wing and loves to cut in. This ability to use both feet makes him incredibly unpredictable and gives his side a lot of flexibility in terms of interchanging or allowing him to come inside.
Dynamic, flair and directness are some of the key qualities of his that have stood out this season. Loves to be isolated, one versus one with his defender, which is where he is often at his best as he is able to be explosive. The trickery and use of both feet is often too much for many defenders at this level. Alongside this, his technical ability is also brilliant, as he is a talented ball carrier, good ball striker and terrific in tight spaces due to his close control.
Aside from this, his power is also a remarkably strong aspect of his game, given his stature. Despite being 173cm and 128lbs, the attacker has great athleticism and power, which allows him to jump up the age groups in the way that he has. Even when playing against League One and Two teams, he didn’t look out of place and managed to keep up with players almost double his age. Ruud Van Nistelrooy also noted this power as a strength when talking about the youngster. The Dutchman said “Physically, he’s very strong and mature already at this age.”
Even his abilities off the ball are very mature at this stage of his development. Scans regularly, can press from the front in a two and has the leadership abilities, as seen by him captaining England. The scanning and body movements before his goal versus West Ham this week demonstrate how good he actually is.
What Is Next For Jeremy Monga
For the rest of the season, it is likely that Monga will continue with the Under 21s, whilst training with the first team on occasion. It is also important to note that he is still in high school and completing his GSCE’s which has therefore, limited him to only being able to train on Thursday’s with the first team. His side also currently sit 5th in Premier League 2 (under 21’s league) so he will be hoping to end the campaign strong with the Foxes.
As for next season, his future is currently undetermined. Interest from Real Madrid, PSG, Chelsea and Manchester City has been rumored so far, with Pep Guardiola’s side seeming to be the front runner. Their policy of brining in the hottest talents in the country has been no secret with the likes of Liam Delap coming from Derby, and Morgan Rogers from West Bromwich Albion. However, many of the talents that have came through their youth system have been loaned out multiple times and then sold with no first team chances. Therefore staying at Leicester could also be the right option.
The explosive winger has already been confirmed to be part of the club’s plans in pre-season, with hopes of him potentially joining the first team for the season. With the East Midlands- based side currently looking likely to go down, minutes in the Championship could easily be afforded to him if he wants to stay.
With wherever this exciting talent goes, it will be intriguing to see how he progresses as one of the most highly rated young players in Europe.
