In a bid to bolster their midfield options, Manchester United have reportedly launched a bid for Burnley’s Sander Berge, eyeing the Norwegian international as an alternative to their primary target, Manuel Ugarte of Paris Saint-Germain. This move reflects the club’s ongoing efforts to revamp their squad following a disappointing Premier League campaign last season.  The same midfield problems from last season haven’t appeared to be resolved based on United’s performance against Fulham.

The Red Devils have been actively pursuing a new central midfielder to strengthen their squad, with PSG’s Manuel Ugarte initially identified as the top target. However, negotiations with the Parisian club have stalled due to a significant disparity in valuations. PSG is holding out for a £52 million fee, a price Manchester United deem excessive for the Uruguayan international. With this impasse, Erik ten Hag’s side is exploring alternatives, with Sander Berge emerging as a viable option.

Berge, who joined Burnley from Sheffield United in August 2023, has quickly established himself as a key player for Burnley. The 26-year-old midfielder brings a blend of physicality, technical skill, and experience to the table, attributes that have caught the eye of United’s recruitment team. Standing at 6’5″, Berge’s imposing presence and ability to dictate play from deep could provide United with the midfield solidity they have been lacking.

Born in Bærum, Norway, Berge began his career at Asker before making a name for himself at Vålerenga. His performances in Norway earned him a move to Belgian club Genk, where he was instrumental in their 2018-19 Belgian championship victory. Berge’s stint in Belgium, highlighted by a strong Europa League run and a place in UEFA’s Champions League breakthrough team of 2019, showcased his potential on the European stage. In January 2020, Berge made the switch to Sheffield United, becoming the club’s record signing. Despite an injury-hit spell that saw the Blades relegated, Berge’s performances in the Championship were enough to secure a move to Burnley, where he has continued to impress.

Manchester United’s initial bid for Berge reportedly falls short of Burnley’s valuation, with the Clarets holding out for around £30 million. United, on the other hand, are believed to be willing to offer £20 million for the Norwegian international. Despite this gap, personal terms are not expected to be a stumbling block, with Berge said to be eager to join the Red Devils on a contract worth £100,000 per week.

United’s interest in Berge signals a potential shift in transfer strategy. While Ugarte remains the club’s preferred option, the reluctance to meet PSG’s high asking price could reflect a more measured approach in the transfer market under the new ownership. This strategy might allow United to address other areas of their squad while still securing a quality addition in midfield.
