Manchester United beat Arsenal 3-2 in their previous Premier League game at Old Trafford. In that game, United played with the 4-2-3-1 formation which saw Cristiano Ronaldo up front supported by Bruno Fernandes in the number 10 position. Rangnick is expected to continue with the 4-2-3-1 formation as the United squad at the moment is best suited to that formation, but what would be interesting to see is whether the German manager would play Donny van de Beek in the double  pivot instead of Scott McTominay. If Rangnick does choose to play the Dutchman in midfield, this would allow United to have more control in the center of the park and also be much quicker on counter attacks which is a trademark of his previous teams.

In attack we can expect the same front three of Ronaldo, Rashford and Sancho but we might also see a lot more fluidity among the front three’s movement supported by Bruno Fernandes in the number 10 role. As Rangnick would have had only a couple of sessions with United squad, it’s hard for him to make any significant changes to how the team is setup against Palace.

From his press conference, the thing which stands out the most is “control”. That’s the reason we expect Rangnick to play Donny van de Beek in midfield and probably also move Bruno Fernandes to a deeper role. United should hold on to the ball much better in the center of the part and that’s difficult with Fred and McTominay as both of them are not good on the ball.

  1. From the control that RR wants, I see a pragmatic 4-4-2 to start, perhaps changing to a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 as the game opens up in the last half hour.

I think over the next half a dozen games, he will rotate quite a bit to see who’s adapting quicker to what he’s asked, then I can see Henderson replacing De Gea, Lindelof & Bailly making life uncomfortable for Maguire (though I think Tuanzebe coming back would upset perceived rankings and reputations, providing the best defensive option from this squad) and Telles playing more often, with Shaw perhaps coming inside to support the DM. Dalot when wanting a wing back on that side (maybe to balance Rashford, Greenwood or Elanga on the left wing, without Sancho on the right) and AWB as a RCB when Maguire or Lindelof pushing on into the base of midfield.

The go-to players will be Henderson, Varane, van de Beek & Ronaldo, but I think and hope to see more of the Cavani-Ronaldo pairing up-front, with Elanga keeping Greenwood & Rashford on their toes as 3rd choice striker.

The creative centre will be interesting with the variations of 8s & 10s, with Fernandes & Pogba having to compete with Lingard, Mata and (big surprise for most) Martial playing a deeper 10 role.

Midfield will see the most variations, with 3-5 players selected, including deep-lying attackers.
