After the departure of Nuno Espirito Santo, Spurs are reported to be in talks with Antonio Conte for the vacant manager spot. Various football journalists and outlets have reported that an agreement between the Italian and Spurs is not very far away. Spurs under Nuno were a docile attacking team who didn’t have a coherent attacking strategy. Against Manchester United in their previous game who came into the game on the back of a 5-0 humiliation against Liverpool, Spurs were not able muster even a single shot on target.

Conte when first appointed as the Chelsea manager chose to field his team in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Only after a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Arsenal, Conte decided to switch to the 3-4-3 formation and Chelsea immediately took to it and went on a 13 game winning run.

The different interpretations of the 3 at the back formation by Conte, Wenger, Pochettino & Guardiola

Conte’s 3-4-3 formation is generally solid at the back, compact when defending and relies on counter-attacks to score goals. The front three at Spurs would suit Conte’s style pretty well provided that Harry Kane can rediscover his from. The problem for Conte would be in the center of defense and in midfield where Spurs do not have the profile of players Conte prefers.

As Conte prefers hardworking and defensive minded players in midfield, this will mean creative players like Ndombele and Lo celso might not be able to fit in this new system. Also at the back, Spurs do not have 3 quality centerbacks at the moment. Conte must play the likes of Tanganga until the January transfer window where he might demand a new signing or two.
