Manchester United were rescued by a late equalizer from Cristiano Ronaldo against Atalanta in their Champions League  group stage game which finished 2-2. Although the result was a good one, the performance was poor and a similar performance against Manchester City in Saturday’s derby might spell more trouble for United’s under pressure manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. United’s best performance in recent times was the game against Spurs which they won 3-0. That victory was on the back of Solskjaer’s tactical switch to move to a back 3. Also, considering that Solskjaer has had previous success against City with a back 3 formation, we predict that the United manager will opt for 3-4-1-2 formation.

With Raphael Varane doubtful for the game with injury, Eric Bailly will replace him in defence. Bailly was excellent against Atalanta so Solskjaer will have confidence in him to step in for the injured Varane. Up front, Ronaldo, Cavani and Bruno will be a threat on the counter but will also have to work hard as Man City will dominate possession and peg United back.

If United were to win against City, it has to be on the counter attack. They will have to sit deep, defend compactly in a low block and wait for opportunities on the counter. This will require their midfield three of Fred, McTominay and Bruno Fernandes to work extremely hard against the City midfield and also be willing to support their attack when the chances arrive.
