According to the Spanish outlet AS, Manchester City’s star striker, Sergio Aguero is set to sign for Barcelona in a 2-year deal. Newly elected president Joan Laporta is said to have okayed the deal to sign the Argentine for free along with another Manchester City player, Eric Garcia. Aguero’s deal with City is set to expire this summer and so far they have been no talks of renewal at Etihad. Considering that his contract is set to expire, Aguero is free to negotiate with any clubs at the moment.
Aguero has been out with injury for most of this season and scored his first goal of the season at the weekend against Fulham. City’s dominance in the league even without their main striker shows that Pep Guardiola has built a system that is not reliant on individual goalscorers. This also might tell us why City have not offered a contract extension for Aguero so far. If you are a betting person, betting on City to win the title might be the best option for you. Another big factor in Aguero’s move to Barcelona will be the contract situation with Lionel Messi. Both the Argentine players are considered to be close friends and Aguero’s arrival might just persuade Messi to stay on at Barcelona. Although Aguero is quite injury prone, he is still one of the best finishers in world football. In many games this season, Barcelona have failed to finish off chances as they have been unable to replace Luis Suarez. In Aguero, they will get a deadly finisher, and also considering their financial situation, a free deal is ideal.
Barcelona are also reportedly interested in Erling Haaland although almost every top club in Europe has been linked to him. If they do manage to sign the Norwegian, then Aguero might have to accept a bit-part role as the Norwegian operates in the same area as the Argentine. But considering his age, Aguero might be content with a reduced playing time as it might allow him to manage his body better and prolong his career.
