Manchester United find themselves out of the FA cup after a 3-1 defeat to Leicester City in the quarter-finals. Even though they are still second in the Premier League, they have minimal hopes of overhauling the 14 point lead Manchester City have at the moment. The last time United went trophyless for 4 years was between 1985/86 and 1989/90. If United don’t manage to win the Europa League this season, then it would be 4 years as they would have to wait till the end of next season to have any other chance to win a trophy. Even in the dismal years post-Ferguson’s retirement, United have managed to avoid such a long draught without trophies.

The Europa League presents a great chance for Solskjaer to claim his first trophy as United manager and silence a lot of his critics. They have an easy draw against the Spanish side, Granada, in the quarter-finals and they should be able to beat them comfortably. If they do manage to win against Granada, they will either face Roma or Ajax. Both are decent teams, but United should have enough quality to beat either of them. Solskjaer has gotten a lot of criticism for United’s performances in cup competitions so far. His tactics and in-game management have come into focus especially during the crunch games in a knockout competition. Against Leicester, United’s midfield was completely overrun as Fred and Matic could simply not cope with the pressing intensity. Both Pogba and Van de Beek could have played in a much deeper role as they are far more press resistant to counter Leicester’s press effectively. By the time Solskjaer made any changes, the game was already gone and Leicester adopted a low block to comfortably see out the game.
