Manchester United after an up and down start to the season find themselves in second place behind the league leaders Manchester City. After being knocked out of the Champions League, United still have a chance to win titles this season as they are still in contention for the Europa League and the FA Cup. There are some weaknesses in United’s squad which if addressed in the summer would give them an excellent opportunity to challenge for the title next season for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

Defence

Although, United have repeatedly splurged on their defence over the past two years but they still do not have settled back four. Aaron Wan-Bissaka needs a backup right back especially someone who is more proficient in attack. Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier has been linked with United and would be a perfect signing for United. Trippier is a boyhood United fan and has excellent crossing skills something which Wan-Bissaka lacks. Attacking full backs have been key to title winning sides in recent times. Although United have a settled center back pairing in Maguire and Lindelof, there is no backup to challenge them seriously. Tuanzebe has been touted as a future starting CB but Solskjaer doesn’t seem to trust him at the moment. Eric Bailly is perenially injured, so United will do very well if they can sign in-form Jannik Vestergaard from Southampton. Set pieces have been a problem for United this season and Vestergaard has been excellent for the Saints this season defensively.

Midfield

Although United have a stacked midfield at the moment it is quite unbalanced. Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek prefer to play as attacking midfielders.  Declan Rice would be a perfect signing as he is comfortable in a deeper defensive role and can challenge Fred for the defensive midfield spot. Rice is also better on the ball than Fred, so distribution from the deep will improve and this is an area United have struggled this season.

Attack

It’s easy to name Jadon Sancho as someone United should sign as they have been lacking a right-winger/forward for a long time now. But it remains to be seen whether Woodward is ready to pay the amount Dortmund are demanding for their star player.
