4 Transfers Man United can make in the summer to close the gap to Man City

Manchester United face Liverpool this weekend in a crucial Premier League fixture at Old Trafford. With United ahead of Chelsea in fifth place by 9 points, Champions League football next is almost confirmed unless there is a dramatic collapse. But the more worrying thing in Mourinho’s mind would be the gap to Man City. Pep Guardiola’s side has raised the bar very high this season and with a young team and more money for transfer, City are looking at long term domination. Mourinho has to mount a better League campaign next season and it is clear that the United squad needs more additions to compete with City. Let’s take a look at 4 players who can help close the gap to Man City.

Defence- Toby Alderweireld

The Spurs central defender is yet to sign a new contract and with reports suggesting that his wage demands are more than what Harry Kane is earning at the moment, it is unlikely that Daniel Levy will break the wage structure to offer the Belgian a new deal. When in form, Alderweireld is one of the best defenders in the Premier League and would improve United’s defence massively

Midfield- Marco Verratti

Even though, United have invested massively in their midfield after Sir Alex left, midfield still remains a big problem area for them. Against high pressing teams, United’s midfield tends to struggle to maintain possession and opt to go back or launch aimless long balls forward. Verratti will be difficult to prise away from PSG, but after another exit from the Champions League, the PSG project might unravel this summer.

Midfield- Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

Various reports have suggested that the Serbian has been watched by United many times this season and that Lazio have already started preparations to replace him in the summer. With Fellaini looking more and more likely to leave Old Trafford in the summer, Mourinho has indicated that he would sign at least two midfielders in the summer.

Attack- Antoine Griezmann

There have been many reports that the Frenchman is set to for Barcelona in the summer but nothing has been confirmed yet and United still do have a chance. United can certainly offer Griezmann more money and more exposure in a team where he would be the biggest star where was in Barcelona, there would be nobody bigger than Lionel Messi.
