According to The Daily Star, Lionel Messi wants Barcelona to sign either of Kevin De Bruyne or Christian Eriksen instead of again going in for Coutinho. Barcelona were involved in a prolonged transfer saga in the summer with Liverpool over the sale of Coutinho which even saw the Brazilian submit a transfer request, but ultimately Liverpool refused to sell their star midfielder. Although Don Balon, the source quoted by The Daily Star claims that Mess would be happy with Coutinho at Barcelona, but the price quoted by Liverpool remains an issue.

Barcelona know that neither of De Bruyne nor Eriksen also will be easy to buy. De Bruyne currently is in the form of his life playing for the best team in England  under Pep Guardiola. Even if De Bruyne wants to move to Barcelona, City could refuse to let him go and no matter how high the offer would be, City have no financial need to sanction a sale. Negotiating with Daniel Levy for Eriksen would be even tougher, but if Tottenham don’t win any trophies this season there might be an exodus in the summer. Due to their strict wage structure, stars like Kane, Alli and Eriksen himself earn much less than their colleagues at other clubs. This might prove to be a major issue for Spurs in the future.
