According to Spanish outlet Don Balon, Lionel Messi thinks that Barcelona need to sign a midfielder in the January transfer window. They claim that Messi made this demand after the game against Athletic Bilbao which Barcelona won 2-0. Although Barca got the 3 points, they had their goalkeeper to thank after Ter Stegen made save after save to keep Bilbao from scoring. It is clear that Barcelona need more control in the center of the park and to keep the ball better to offer their defence more protection. Although Paulinho has defied critics and has proven to be a solid signing, Barcelona should look to add to their midfield options in January. Let’s take a look at some of the options.
Coutinho
After a prolonged transfer saga in the summer, Barcelona were unable to prise the Brazilian from Liverpool even after a transfer request has been submitted. But Liverpool’s poor start to the season might force to Coutinho to agitate for a move once again and this time the club might just let him go.
Thiago Alcantara
There have been rumours in the summer too that Barcelona might want to bring Thiago back to the Camp Nou. Bayern’s poor start and Ancelotti’s sacking might be a chance for Barca to bring back “Xavi’s heir” in January.
Christian Eriksen
Tottenham have done really well to hold onto their stars so far. But the cracks will start appearing as their strict wage structure doesn’t allow players like Harry Kane, Eriksen and Alli to be paid as much as the current market rates for top players. Eriksen will fit in easily at Barcelona and will be an upgrade to Ivan Rakitic.
Jean Michael Serri
Another transfer saga which ended disastrously for Barcelona in the summer. The Catalan club might find it hard to convince Serri this time around after the summer move collapsed with both the clubs blaming each other.
Leon Goretzka
The Schalke midfielder has been coveted by the likes of Bayern Munich and Manchester United in the past, so Barcelona might be involved in a tough race for his signature. If Bayern get involved, it is hard to see the German come to Barcelona.
