Manchester United have confirmed that their third signing in this summer transfer window is Nemanja Matic from Chelsea in a £40million transfer. Mourinho by signing Matic has solved a long standing problem at Old Trafford where fans have not seen the club sign a defensive midfielder after the signing of Owen Hargreaves from Bayern Munich in 2007. Matic who will be reunited with Jose Mourinho is expected to fit in straightaway into the first team. Mourinho still wants one more signing in this window, which is widely expected to be a left winger based on United’s repeated attempts to sign Ivan Perisic.

Although, early in his career, Mourinho was a staunch believer in the 4-3-3 formation, in the past decade his favoured formation has been the 4-2-3-1. But in Paul Pogba, he has a world class talent in his squad and should aim to build the squad around him. Pogba’s struggles in a two man midfield gives Mourinho enough reason to use the 4-3-3 formation for the new season.

A midfield three of Pogba-Herrera-Matic will certainly be one of the strongest in the League and one of the best to have ever played for United in the Premier League at least on paper. Matic is an excellent ball winner and interceptor combined with Herrera who can do a bit of everything can form a fearsome double pivot. They can provide the ideal base for Paul Pogba who has historically thrived in an advanced midfield role.

Mourinho has also hinted during the pre-season that the 3-5-2 formation is also an option. United did use the 3-5-2 formation during the first two pre-season friendlies.

Will Jose Mourinho opt for the 3-5-2 formation?
