Michael Carrick’s re-emergence as Manchester United’s holding player has been key to United’s revival. Although United have not got a set of good results, they have played considerably well after the defeat against Chelsea. Carrick generally has been partnered with in-form Ander Herrera in midfield which allows Pogba the freedom to drive and run at the opposition defence. Although Pogba still has not his peak form, a Herrera-Carrick double pivot provides the best base for him to go forward towards the box and display the best of his abilities.
Biggest problem for Jose Mourinho will be to replace Michael Carrick although it is almost certain that the Englishman will get a contract extension but at his age, United can’t depend on him every week. Mourinho needs to buy a deep lying playmaker at least in the summer. Herrera has adapted really well to the deep role but he still more of a box to box midfielder than someone who sits before the defence and starts out attacks.
