Michael Carrick, the lynch-pin of United’s midfield over the past decade is wanted by Everton and they could sign him up for free as the Englishman has not been yet offered a new contract by his current team. Carrick has said that he would like to continue at United if possible but uptil now there have been no talks regarding his new contract. For such a long serving player, United’ attitude is a bit surprising. When Sir Alex was in-charge, Manchester United always treated the senior players well with the likes of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes playing well into their late 30s. But with uncertainty surrounding the managerial situation, the club doesn’t want to commit itself to any player especially one who is at the end of his career.

His intelligence, passing and composure have helped United rack up the trophies after he joined them in 2006. Under Ferguson,he was one of the first names on the teamsheet, rarely being dropped. Unfortunately the same can’t be said about his England career, where the manager always preferred bigger names although England’s midfield remained dysfunctional as ever. Van Gaal should sign him up for at least one more year,as his experience will help the youngsters a lot and maybe he doesn’t have the legs to play every week, but his composure and passing will definitely help United in seeing off games.
