The Liverpool v Man Utd rivalry is considered to be one of the biggest and most fiercely fought rivalries in world football. The roots of this rivalry go back to the industrial revolution when both Liverpool and Manchester were bustling economies with great hope for the future. The rivalry started after the Manchester canal was built and the Liverpool port lost its significance. As both Liverpool and Manchester United saw success and turned into global clubs with fan following all over the world, this rivalry showed no signs of toning down. The below video shows the complete history of this rivalry from the industrial revolution to the arrival of Sir Alex Ferguson.

This weekend’s game sees both the clubs go head to head at Old Trafford for the first time this season. Although both the clubs have lost a lot of iconic players(Neville,Gerrard,Giggs,Carragher) who symbolised this fixture in the past 4-5 years, the rivalry has not toned down a bit. Rodgers and Van Gaal both will be hoping for a win as it will give a boost to the faltering start to the season by both the clubs. Van Gaal is especially under pressure after a crazy last day in the transfer window which saw Manchester United spend record amount of money for Anthony Martial. Rodgers on the other hand did business early and his signings this season have bedded in early and look much better than some of his other signings.
