Manchester United can simply not afford to drop any points against Burnley after a horrible performance against West Ham. Van Gaal after his press conference where he brought out stat sheets apparently proving that United play a lot less long balls than made out to now has to prove that on the pitch. He finally dropped the 3-5-2 formation after pressure from the fans but they quickly realized that the problem lies much deeper. Static forwards and unimaginative midfielders are combining to give United fans a sense of deja vu back to last year under Moyes. Van Gaal’s “philosophy” is nowhere to be seen and Fellaini upfront seems to be the only option which is working at the moment.
United have been playing a 4-4-2 diamond for the past two weeks with Rooney as a shuttler. Rooney hasn’t had a shot on target in 2015 and if he keeps playing in the diamond we can expect this streak to go on for sometime. Van Gaal has not given Ander Herrera any starts since a very long time and this has continued even in this game.
