Wayne Rooney has equaled David Beckham’s record for England as the most capped outfield player against Iceland. Although, it might be the worst ever match in Rooney’s England career, it is a significant achievement for the England and Manchester United captain. Rooney who has been playing as a central midfielder for England in the Euros had a horrible game giving away the ball many times.

Jose Mourinho now has to decide whether Rooney will continue in midfield or will go back to being a striker when the new season starts. With Zlatan and Rashford likely to be the attacking options upfront, it is difficult to see how Rooney will get a chance to start as a striker. His first touch is poor and it doesn’t allow him the time in tight situations to pick out a pass. This hinders Rooney’s ability to play in central midfield. Also, his defensive positioning is questionable and someone like Jose Mourinho wouldn’t risk him with any defensive duties.
