David De Gea has won his third Matt Busby Fans Player of the year trophy in a row. The Spaniard has been in stunning form this season and has single handedly won many matches for his club. Last summer, the former Atletico goalkeeper almost moved to Real Madrid but a last minute mixup with the fax machine allowed United to retain their star player. De Gea signed a new contract, but it remains to be seen whether he intends to stay at United for long especially as the club are again in danger of missing out on Champions League.

When a goalkeeper wins the best player award for three consecutive years, then it tells a great deal about how the club is playing. The quality of attack has been poor for all the three years after Sir Alex left. Van Gaal again in the awards ceremony claimed that United are in transition and he will stay on for one more year to complete his contract. Any other top European club would have sacked the Dutchman way back in November/ December when United were knocked out of the easiest Champions League group and were playing terrible football. But Manchester United’ board and Ed Woodward do not seem to know what is best for the club or have other motives.
