Lionel Messi has praised Manchester United and England Captain Wayne Rooney in an interview to Shortlist.

“There has always been a great deal of respect between myself and Wayne Rooney,”

“For me he is the great English player of the generation”

“What he is capable of doing on the field is very special, and he is one of the few players that would improve any squad in Europe.”

Messi and Rooney have faced off four times in the Champions League where Barcelona have won twice, in the 2009 and 2011 Champions League finals. Recently due to the form of Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy, there has been lot of pressure on England coach regarding whether Rooney should start in the Euros or not. Hodgson has insisted that his captain doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone and intends to start him as soon as he is available. Rooney’s best positions at the moment are as a striker or as a number 10. Up top, Harry Kane looks irresistible and Dele Alli was impressive against Germany as the number 10. Rooney on the hand except in the Euro 2004 has been poor for England in all major competitions so far. Maybe it’s time for the England captain to accept the fact that he is no longer the best for England.
