It is almost confirmed that Jose Mourinho will be taking over at Manchester United in the summer. Most Manchester United fans will be happy after three seasons of underachievement under David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal, that they are getting someone with a proven track record. Although Mourinho might bring success to Old Trafford, many believe that he is not the right man. Sir Bobby Charlton has always been strongly against Mourinho taking over at United. Lets take a look at some of the reasons Mourinho isn’t the right person for the United job.
Youth Policy
Van Gaal has presided over some of the worst performances by a modern Manchester United team but fans in the future might look kindly at his tenure thanks to his policy of favoring youth players. Van Gaal insisted that United should have a smaller squad so that when needed he can call upon the talented youngsters. Mourinho is not someone who will risk that and he always has a pool of experienced players, he always picks from. For Mourinho, winning is everything and he doesn’t trust the youngsters to do what he wants on the pitch
Length of Stay
United’s most successful periods have been under Ferguson and Sir Matt Busby,both who reigned at Old Trafford for a really long time. David Moyes was given a six year contract initially and this shows that United want the next coach to build a dynasty like Fergie did. Mourinho is the complete opposite, he believes that every team has a cycle for about 2-3 years. And when that cycle comes to an end, Mourinho doesn’t stick around.
Scorched Earth Policy
Except for Porto, Mourinho has left all the clubs he managed in a bad state when he quit his job as the manager. Example- Inter Milan, Mourinho won the treble with players who were well past the peak, didn’t bother to build a squad for the future or give chances to any youngsters and the next coach struggled to get the team going. Inter has still not recovered. With Real Madrid, when he left, the squad was literally divided into two and the club captain and legend was alienated.
Public Image
Mourinho is a very controversial man with his outspoken manner and his actions on the pitch. From poking people in the eye to branding experienced managers ,”Specialist in Failure” , Mourinho has done it all. This aspect of Mourinho is what prevented him in getting the United job when Fergie left.
