Manchester United assistant coach Ryan Giggs was missing at Old Trafford for the Stoke game. Giggs was given compassionate leave by Van Gaal to attend to his sick relative. Giggs missed United’s best performance in a long long time as they attacked Stoke City with vigour and intensity. There were rumours about Giggs being the next Celtic coach and his absence was attributed to the same. Giggs is certainly a candidate to replace Van Gaal when the Dutchman leaves Old Trafford but it remains to be seen whether Ed Woodward will trust the Welshman. Woodward has already got two managerial appointments wrong and this has costed Manchester United a lot and they still haven’t recovered from Sir Alex’s departure.

Although Manchester United played wonderfully against Stoke, they remain 5 points off the top 4. Even if they qualify for the Champions League, this season will be termed as a failure. Against Stoke City,Michael Carrick was extremely influential and Wayne Rooney continued his good form with an assist and a goal. Juan Mata showed what will happen if he is played as the number 10. Like last season, maybe Van Gaal has hit on the right formation just by pure luck.
