Anthony Martial took the ball,beat two Liverpool defenders and slotted it past Mignolet in a Henry-esque finish as Old Trafford erupted in delirium. But the United fans are no newcomers to stunning debuts as Wayne Rooney’s hattrick against Fenerbahce is still fresh in everyone’s memory. Martial’s finish was stunning but the opponents United were facing made it even sweeter. Every United player becomes a legend if he performs heroics against Liverpool. Forlan,Berbatov and now Martial are part of the Old Trafford folklore for years to come.
Lionel Messi also had a stunning debut as the Argentine chipped over the keeper after a pass from Ronaldinho. In Fact Messi chipped the goalkeeper twice as the first goal was wrongly ruled offside. Both Messi and Wayne Rooney were high profile debuts because of their talent but Martial’s debut became more high profile because of the fee he commanded. But with his goal, Martial signalled to everyone that he has all the chance in the world to become a world class footballer. Manchester United beat Liverpool 3-1 in what was a dull boring game lit by the brilliance of Benteke’s and Martial’s goals. Blind and Ander Herrera scored the other two goals for United after the first half ended 0-0.
