The Premier League trophy spent the last three seasons in the city of Manchester.  Manchester United won the trophy in 2013, and Manchester City was crowned champions in 2012 as well as earlier this year.

The Sky Blues are fighting for the right to defend their title at the end of this season, and are currently third in the standings after 9 weeks into the season.  But the team to beat this year is one of the biggest rivals of both Manchester teams – Chelsea FC.

The Pensioners are undefeated in their first 9 games of the Premier League season.  The team is also 2-1-0 in the first half of their group stage in the Champions League, and defeated Bolton Wanderers with a score of 2-1 in their first Capital One Cup match of the season.  Clearly Chelsea is the real deal!

Jose Mourinho is leading a successful side this season, picking up from last year’s efforts when Chelsea finished as second runners-up to City.  Mourinho and his players travelled to Etihad Stadium to face off with City on September 21 in a match that ended in a 1-1 draw.

The goal scorers of the night were winger André Schürrle for the current league leaders, and Frank Lampard – Chelsea’s former top midfielder for City’s side.  Not exactly the blowout that Chelsea was betting on to topple the reigning Premier League champions, but a thrilling clash of the titans for fans and commentators to take in.

Chelsea and City are two of the top teams constantly under the scope for analysis in the media as well as online.  Sportsbooks and blogs bet on the winning football teams in detailed analyses, and there is always lots of attention paid to the elite teams in the UK’s top tiered league.

Chelsea was put under tougher scrutiny when the team’s elite striker Diego Costa was injured while playing for the Spanish national team in the Euro qualifiers. Mourinho was forced to retool his squad, raising questions about how the team would respond without Costa’s goal scoring abilities.

But the team managed to perform without Costa.  Chelsea beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in their first Premier League game following the break for the Euro qualifiers, and followed up with a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford against the Red Devils.  The team even connected in the Champions League by crushing Maribor 6-0 to take a commanding lead of their opening group.

Chelsea is without question the number one team in the UK this season.  There’s still a lot of time for things to turn around, but few people could bet against the team at Stamford Bridge contending for the Premier League trophy – and maybe the Champions League trophy this season.
